Sustainable Consumption

Car free day: the future of the planet!

The Car Free Day (September 22) is the day to combat air pollution and the excessive emission of greenhouse gases. For this, the date is aimed at educating the public on the importance of transit than car. It is moving bus, subway or train, on foot or by bicycle, which anyone can contribute. Moreover, there must be investment in public transport good quality, efficient and inexpensive, and the creation of public policies for the sector. Encourage non-motorized forms of transportation is also key.

The first Car Free Day was held in France in 1998. Since then, the mobilization has spread to several countries, arriving in Brazil in 2001. In 2005, about 43 municipalities participated, as Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte and Salvador, among others. Here, the transportation sector accounts for nearly half of oil consumption in the country, in the form of diesel and gasoline. It is also the main source of carbon dioxide in major Brazilian cities.

In addition, the combustion of petroleum products causes serious damage to health, and is the most responsible for emissions of greenhouse gases in the world, contributing to global warming. Cities modified to behave more and more cars and less relationships between people are also results of "car culture".

If you have a car, can also contribute to minimize air pollution and climate change taking your car regularly to review and keep it always in order. At the time of supply, prioritize the ethanol and biodiesel, when feasible. These fuels emit less greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

But on September 22, and whenever possible, leave your car in the garage. Go by bus, train or subway, on foot or by bicycle, or encourage carpooling.

Join Idec in the fight for a quality public transport. Click here to send a message to the authorities demanding the adoption of public policies for the sector.

Be a responsible consumer:
  • Seek alternative forms of transport: walk on foot or by bicycle, use public transportation, take a ride with friends.
  • Take your car to review periodically.
  • Prioritize the ethanol and biodiesel (sustainable!) At the time of supply, when possible.
  • Requires the creation of safe bike paths.
